Rey Mysterio WWE
Rey Mysterio
In 2002, Rey was then signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but was asked to wear the mask again, which can have one fined and even have one's license suspended in lucha libre by the Box y Lucha Commission because once a wrestler loses his mask, he cannot regain it. However, donning the mask again wasn't Mysterio's decision. In deference to this tradition, Rey continues to not wear a mask while performing in Mexico, including non wrestling appearences in the WWE procuced Rey Mysterio: 619 DVD.
A popular performer and multiple-time WWE Cruiserweight champion, Rey has already made his mark in WWE. He is considered a great aerial wrestler and many also consider him a legend in the making. He has held the WCW/WWE Cruiserweight championship eight times, more than anyone else in history.
Rey also had a performace on the WWE Originals CD released in early 2004 with a bilingual song called "Crossing Borders." The song served as the official theme song for 2004's No Way Out pay-per-view event.
On February 20, 2005, Rey won his third WWE Tag-Team Championship along with long time friend, and former rival, the late Eddie Guerrero when they defeated Doug Basham and Danny Basham at the No Way Out PPV.
However, in a surprising departure from traditional booking, the new champions did not defend their titles at WrestleMania 21 on April 3, 2005, but instead faced one another, with Rey getting the victory.
This would lead to a storyline in which the team would break up and see Guerrero turn heel due to Guerrero's inabillity to defeat Mysterio.
Absent from SmackDown! due to an attack by Guerrero, Mysterio returned at Judgment Day and won a match against Eddie, who went on to attack Mysterio repeatedly with a steel chair.
Guerrero and Mysterio continued to feud, with Eddie threatening to reveal a secret he and Mysterio share involving Mysterio's son, Dominik, unless Mysterio defers to Eddie's authority. A match was scheduled for the July 24 Great American Bash, with the stipulations being that if Rey won, Eddie would not tell, but if Eddie wins, he would tell. Mysterio defeated Guerrero with his son at ringside.
Rey Mysterio performing a Crossbody on Doug BashamAfter the Great American Bash, Eddie Guerrero broke his promise and revealed to the world that he is Dominick's (Mysterio's son) biological father. In the storyline, Eddie knowing Mysterio was having trouble starting his own family, Eddie left Dominick with Rey and his wife to raise. (However, in reality Rey is really Dominic's father as the "custody dispute" was an example of kayfabe). In subsequent weeks, Eddie threatened to take custody of Dominick, drawing up custody papers and having his lawyer present them to Mysterio. At SummerSlam 2005, Rey defeated Eddie in a Ladder Match for the custody of Dominic.
On the first edition of Friday Night Smackdown!, Rey Mysterio had his second loss (the first being a WWE Championship match on the SmackDown after WrestleMania XX) to Eddie Guerrero in a steel cage match, after first missing a crossbody from the top of the cage, and then being hit with Eddie's Frog Splash.
On the September 16, 2005 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Rey debuted a new entrance theme - "Booyaka 619", a reggaeton song in which he sings along with Mad One.
Mysterio also had a feud with John Bradshaw Layfield, which culminated in a match at No Mercy where JBL came out victorious. In the coming weeks to the match at No Mercy, the storyline had JBL making statements about being a true American, and stated that Mysterio was not a citizen.
The feud continued past No Mercy on the October 21, 2005 edition of SmackDown! where the two were set to face off in a singles contest, which was interupted by RAW wrestlers Edge and Chris Masters, who speared and masterlocked Mysterio. Mysterio got revenge appearing on RAW the following Monday, nailing Edge with a springboard drop kick and Lita with a 619. Taboo Tuesday featured a RAW versus SmackDown! tag team event which featured Snitsky and Chris Masters lost to Rey Mysterio & Matt Hardy in which the fans voted who the two Smackdown! superstars would be. Ironically, Taboo Tuesday was performed in San Diego, California, Rey's "background".
Death of Eddie Guerrero
On November 13, 2005, Eddie Guerrero was found dead in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That same day at a WWE "Super Show" where SmackDown! and RAW were both taped, Mysterio gave an emotional speech about his late friend Eddie, and was so emotionally upset that he even took off his mask off and cried softly,(though he put his head down, so no one could see his face.) Mysterio went on to defeat Shawn Michaels in an interpromotional match later the same night. After the match, Michaels and Mysterio hugged in the ring and Mysterio pointed up to the sky, crying, in memory of Eddie Guerrero. This began a span of weeks through which Mysterio, along with friends Chris Benoit and Chavo Guerrero, would continue to dedicate their victories to Eddie either by word or by using his moves during his matches; Eddie chants continued to follow Rey and Chavo in their matches.
SmackDown! vs RAW
Mysterio participated in the main event of Survivor Series as part of Team SmackDown! (along with Randy Orton, Eddie Guerrero's replacement), PPV debutant Bobby Lashley, Batista and JBL who defeated Team RAW (Shawn Michaels, Kane, Big Show, Carlito, and Chris Masters). On the Tuesday after Survivor Series, Mysterio faced RAW's giant, Big Show, in a match billed as David vs. Goliath in a Smackdown! Special.
This grudge match, stemming from Mysterio elimiating Big Show at Survivor Series, ended as a "no contest" when Big Show's tag team partner, Kane, interfered in the match. Mysterio continued to fued with RAW's World Tag Team Champions, even gaining a tag team partner in then-World Heavyweight Champion Batista who, along with Mysterio, would be set to face RAW's Big Show and Kane in a tag match at Armageddon.
However, before both men would get to Armageddon, Batista and Mysterio would defeat MNM to become SmackDown! new WWE Tag Team Champions in a match they both dedicated to the late, Eddie Guerrero. Now the Tag Team Champions, Mysterio and Batista's match with Big Show and Kane would be billed as Champions vs. Champions. Mysterio and Batista would lose this RAW vs SmackDown! encounter when Kane pinned Mysterio after first chokeslaming him.
And this would not be the end of the teams losing-ways as on the December 30, 2005 edition of SmackDown!, MNM envoked their rematch clause, defeating Batista and Mysterio, with help from the returning Mark Henry, to regain the WWE Tag-Team Championships. World Champion Batista and Mysterio would stay together as close freinds until Batista would be put out of action as a result of injury. Batista would leave SmackDown! and his World Title; pointing out that Mysterio would be a deserving Champion.
Road to WrestleMania
On January 29, 2006 Mysterio competed in the Royal Rumble's "Royal Rumble match" where he entered in the number 2 position, lasting over an one hour in the ring to finally eliminate Randy Orton and win the match. By winning the Royal Rumble match, Mysterio gained a World Heavyweight title shot at that years WrestleMania which would be the first time Mysterio competed for a World Title during a pay-per-view event.
Mysterio dedicated his fight, and his later win at the Royal Rumble to Eddie Guerrero. After his win, he was congratulated by Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Rob Van Dam - all old and close friends of Eddie Guerrero.
During the February 3, 2006 episode of Smackdown!, an upset Randy Orton interrupted Mysterio's victory speech to challenge Mysterio for his WrestleMania title shot. As Mysterio looked upward for guidance on this decision ortan verbally attacked him and the memory of Guerrero, saying "Eddie Guerrero ain't in heaven, he's 'down there'-- IN HELL!" Mysterio would attack Orton and later except the challenge.
The challenge would take place at No Way Out with Randy Orton defeating Mysterio while illegally using the ring ropes to aid a pin. Having lost the title shot at WrestleMania 22, Mysterio cried backstage with a few of Guerrero's close family. However on a later edition of Smackdown!, an empethetic Smackdown! GM Theodore Long would declared the World Title match would include Mysterio, making the match a Triple Threat that would see Mysterio face off against both Randy Orton and then-World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle, who had won Batista's vacated title.
World Heavyweight Champion
At WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Mysterio became the World Heavyweight Champion by pinning Randy Orton in a Triple Threat Match, following a 619 and a West Coast Pop. This victory was historic on many levels, as Mysterio became the shortest (5'6") and lightest (165 lb) world champion in WWE history. He is the third masked wrestler (after Kane and Mankind) and third Hispanic wrestler (after Pedro Morales and Eddie Guerrero) to win a WWE world title. Following this victory, Mysterio was congratulated on the entrance ramp by Chavo Guerrero Jr. and Vickie Guerrero, and backstage by his good friend Chris Benoit.
A Feud with JBL
On the April 7, 2006 edition of SmackDown!, Mysterio made his first successful World Heavyweight Title defense against Randy Orton. Mysterio would go on to retain his title in Kurt Angles' title rematch before feuding with the-then United States Champion John "Bradshaw" Layfield.
This feud with JBL would see Mysterio face off against any opponent of JBL's choosing in the weeks leading up to his title match against Mysterio at WWE Judgement Day 2006. Mysterio would be defeated by both Mark Henry and The Great Khali in non-title singles matches leading up to the PPV.
During the press conference JBL and Mysterio had to be seperated by Mark Henry and Booker T as a fight was about to break out.
